CROSSGATES & DISTRICT GOOD NEIGHBOURS SCHEME
Extend Gentle Exercise Class
The Extend exercise class started in January 2005 with 11 people attending the first session. Now, just over a year later, we regularly attract two to three times that number. Most new members have joined on the recommendation of existing members. The class is taught by a qualified instructor, Chrissie Cummings and is aimed at the older or less mobile person, who wants to make the most of, or “Extend” their moveability or zest for living. Both male and female members are very welcome.
Extend activityThe class is divided into two sessions, one seated and one standing, with a welcome break for tea and biscuits in the middle. All the exercises are designed to work different muscles, but the participants don't know that. All we know is that we are having an enjoyable afternoon in congenial company. The gentle exercise routines are within most people's capabilities, and in any case we are encouraged only to do what we feel comfortable with. Members are welcome to sit out or substitute an exercise with something easier for them if they so wish. Chrissie is a past master at making the routines fun and entertaining. We all enjoy moving in time with the music, even breaking into song if the mood takes us. Whilst none of us would pretend to have become sylph-like since attending the classes, most would agree to feeling fitter and more able. Even if it is only to be able to walk that bit further or get out of a chair more easily. Members of the class come in all shapes, sizes, ages and athletic ability (well not so much of the latter except for Chrissie), so don't be worried about whether or not, you will fit in. Come along and join us. The classes are held from 2.00pm until 3.30pm every Wednesday at the Crossgates Community Centre Maryfield Avenue. Transport is available, if required, for those unable to make it under their “own steam”.
Why Gentle Exercise Matters for Our Community
As we get older, staying active becomes one of the most important things we can do for our health and independence. Gentle, regular movement helps to keep joints supple, muscles strong, and balance steady, all of which play a crucial role in preventing falls and maintaining the ability to carry out everyday tasks. But perhaps just as important is the boost it gives to our mental wellbeing. Exercise releases endorphins, lifts mood, and can even improve sleep. For many of us, the thought of a traditional gym class is intimidating, but the Extend class is different—it is designed specifically for older adults and those with limited mobility, in a supportive and friendly environment where no one is judged or left behind.
The class is not about pushing ourselves to the limit; it is about moving in ways that feel good and safe, while still challenging ourselves gently. Chrissie, our wonderful instructor, has a deep understanding of how the body changes with age and always provides alternative movements for those who need them. Whether you are recovering from an illness, managing a long‑term condition, or simply want to keep doing the things you love for longer, this class will help you feel more capable and confident in your own body.

A Typical Session: What to Expect
If you have never been to an Extend class before, you might feel a little unsure about what to expect. Rest assured, there is no complicated equipment, no need for special clothing beyond something comfortable, and absolutely no pressure to perform. Each one‑hour‑and‑a‑half session is thoughtfully structured to include both seated and standing exercises, so you can participate fully whether you are steady on your feet or prefer to stay seated for the entire class. We begin with a gentle warm‑up to get the blood flowing, followed by a series of exercises that focus on different parts of the body—arms, legs, core, and balance—all set to music that makes the time fly by.
Halfway through we break for tea and biscuits, which is often the highlight of the afternoon. It is a chance to catch up with friends, meet new people, and rest before the second half. The second portion of the class includes more standing exercises for those who are able, but again, everything can be adapted. Chrissie is brilliant at making the routines fun and entertaining—we often find ourselves singing along to familiar tunes and laughing at our own missteps. The atmosphere is always light‑hearted, and you are welcome to sit out any exercise or simply observe if that is what you need. There is no competition here; we are all just doing what we can.
The Social Side: More Than Just Exercise
While the physical benefits of the Extend class are clear, the social connections formed are just as valuable. Loneliness and isolation are real challenges for many older adults, and having a regular weekly gathering provides a reliable opportunity to see friendly faces and share a laugh. Over the months and years, members have become genuine friends, checking in on one another outside of class, celebrating birthdays, and offering support during difficult times. The class has created a little community within the wider Crossgates area, and that sense of belonging is something we all treasure.
New members are always made to feel welcome from the very first visit. You do not need to come with a friend—though you are welcome to bring one—because by the end of the afternoon, you will have made several. We have members of all ages and backgrounds, and everyone is encouraged to go at their own pace. If you have been feeling a bit isolated or simply want to add some structure to your week, this class is a wonderful place to start.

Practical Information: What to Bring and Wear
Getting started with the Extend class is easy, and there are no hidden requirements. We always suggest wearing loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely—trousers or a skirt with an elasticated waist, and a top that does not restrict your arms. Flat, supportive shoes are important for the standing portions, such as trainers or well‑fitting lace‑ups, to help you feel stable. If you prefer to exercise in socks or slippers while seated, that is perfectly fine too. You might like to bring a bottle of water, though tea and biscuits are provided at the break.
There is no need to bring any equipment; everything is provided for you. If you have any health concerns or are unsure whether the class is suitable for you, please speak to your GP first, but in most cases gentle exercise is highly recommended. You are also welcome to come along and simply watch a session before deciding whether to join in—we are happy for you to sit and observe, and Chrissie will be glad to answer any questions you have.
Joining the Good Neighbours Scheme and Other Activities
The Extend Gentle Exercise Class is just one part of the wider Crossgates & District Good Neighbours Scheme, a volunteer‑led initiative that aims to bring people together and offer practical support to those who need it. The scheme is built on the simple idea that neighbours can help neighbours, whether through lifts to appointments, help with shopping, or simply a friendly phone call. The exercise class grew out of that ethos: providing a safe, enjoyable way for local residents to stay active and connected.
Alongside the weekly Extend class, the scheme offers a range of other activities and services that change from time to time, all designed to promote wellbeing and reduce isolation. If you enjoy the class, you might also be interested in some of the other events or volunteer opportunities available. For more information about the scheme, please visit our Articles archive or check the Community events page to see what is coming up. You can also find links to other local resources on our Links page. We are always pleased to welcome new faces, whether you come for the exercise, the company, or both—so why not give it a try?
